Little fabric purses - A big trend for 2024

I'm a big fan of little fabric purses. They're so versatile and can be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion.

Fabric purses can be made in many styles from cross-body and back-pack to satchel and fanny pack. Lately, I have been making small bags that can be worn around the neck, almost like a necklace.

I think if your fabric purse is detailed with hand stitching and quality trim, it is considered wearable art. That is a good term for it, don’t you think?

This little purse took a couple of hours to make. It is suitable for both women and men and is meant to wear around the neck like a medicine bag.

Making your own fabric purse

Making your own fabric purse is a great way to get a unique and stylish accessory that perfectly matches your taste. It's also a fun and rewarding project, and it's easier than you might think!

Here's a basic beginner’s tutorial on how to make your own fabric purse:

Materials:

Fabric (for the exterior and interior of the purse)
Interfacing (optional, for added support)
Sewing machine
Sewing needle and thread
Scissors
Buttons and trims
Pins
Measuring tape

Instructions:

  1. Cut out your fabric pieces according to your desired purse pattern. Be sure to add seam allowances to all of your pieces.
  2. If you're using interfacing, fuse it to the wrong side of your fabric pieces.
  3. Sew the exterior fabric pieces together, right sides facing.
  4. Sew the interior fabric pieces together, right sides facing.
  5. Turn the exterior fabric piece right side out.
  6. Insert the interior fabric piece into the exterior fabric piece. Seams should be inside where you can’t see them.
  7. Sew the outside of your purse to the lining, all around the opening.
  8. Sew on some cord or other type of handles.
  9. Decorate with a favorite button or some tassels.

And that's it! You've now made your own fabric purse!

This was a fun project. After making dozens of little bags, I had some Dancing Calico labels printed up. I think it adds a professional touch, don't you?

Tips for making a fabric purse:

  • Choose a fabric that is sturdy enough to hold up to regular use.
  • If you're using fusible interfacing, be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for fusing it to your fabric.
  • Take your time sewing the pieces together. It's important to be accurate to ensure that your purse is well-made and durable.
  • Use a sharp needle and good quality thread. This will help to prevent your stitches from breaking.
  • If you're new to sewing, there are many tutorials available online and in books. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it.

With a little time and effort, you can make a beautiful and stylish fabric purse that is sure to turn heads. So get creative and have fun!

Can I sell my handmade fabric purses?

Yes! Fabric purses sell well at fairs, craft shows, in stores, and online. Prices range from twenty to hundreds of dollars.

I sell my little purses on Etsy. Check out my Dancing Calico Etsy Shop if you are interested.

I love that most fabric purses are relatively affordable, so people can collect a few different ones to match their outfits.

Little fabric purses are popular in fashion right now. Here are a few reasons people like them.

  • They're practical. Little fabric purses are perfect for carrying around your essentials, like your phone, wallet, and keys. They're also lightweight and easy to carry, so they're perfect for everyday use.
  • They're stylish. Little fabric purses come in a variety of colors, patterns, and styles, so you can find one that fits your personal taste. They can also add a pop of interest to any outfit.
  • They're sustainable. Fabric purses are a more sustainable option than leather or synthetic purses. I use thrifted or recycled fabrics and trims, which is a bonus.
  • Men like them, too. Both men and women wear small bags, sometimes known as medicine bags or herb pouches.

If you're looking for a new purse or wanting to craft something with fabric, I highly recommend checking out little fabric purses. They're a great way to have fun and possibly make some money.
